    We describe spiders as occasional invaders. Often we would not even know they frequent our living space if not for cobwebs we discover in the corners of undisturbed areas. There are two spiders in Arizona we commonly identify as problematic to people, the Arizona brown (recluse) spider and the black widow spider. While all spiders use venom to subdue their prey, the venom from these two spiders can be harmful to people. Black widow spiders are not typically discovered within our living spaces, we find them more commonly in garages, utility closets, and unfinished basements. Arizona brown spiders are commonly found within homes, and appreciate the air conditioning we provide, although highly adaptable outside. If not for these two, it would be easier to argue spiders are beneficial because they also eat insects!

    To be fair, bats are an ally when wanting to fight mosquito pressure and other flying insects that may harm agriculture.

    Further, bats are important pollinators of plants and crops. So we are not generally aiming to eliminate bats, but we do want to prevent them from inhabiting areas in which we live and work.

    We tend not to worry about being bitten by bats and the chance a bat is carrying rabies is extremely low. However, bat droppings can carry disease and make quite a mess. We have a lot of stucco here in Arizona, and that stucco can be stained by the highly acidic nature of bat excrement. Bat droppings can also accumulate beneath areas where they perch making a mess on our patios that can be mistaken for rodent droppings.
