    We describe spiders as occasional invaders. Often we would not even know they frequent our living space if not for cobwebs we discover in the corners of undisturbed areas. There are two spiders in Arizona we commonly identify as problematic to people, the Arizona brown (recluse) spider and the black widow spider. While all spiders use venom to subdue their prey, the venom from these two spiders can be harmful to people. Black widow spiders are not typically discovered within our living spaces, we find them more commonly in garages, utility closets, and unfinished basements. Arizona brown spiders are commonly found within homes, and appreciate the air conditioning we provide, although highly adaptable outside. If not for these two, it would be easier to argue spiders are beneficial because they also eat insects!

    The mosquito is a vector for multiple diseases that can be terribly harmful to people. And if that wasn’t enough, a mosquito bite can be a major annoyance. Arizona mosquito pressure has been noticeably increasing over the last 15 years, making our outdoor time a little less enjoyable. While it is difficult to pinpoint exactly why its happening, we have developed methods to adapt to these changing circumstances. Here’s a little tip for homeowners: make sure there is no standing water in your yard including wheelbarrows, children’s toys, or even bottle caps that can collect water.

    Our knowledgeable and experienced staff will assess the property you need treated to determine the best approach. There are many factors to consider such as the type of weeds present, what plants are established in the yard, future plans associated with the space, and overall customer expectation. A plan is tailored to your specific property and the final estimate is generated.

    ✔ Initial Treatment

    The property you need treated will be tended to by one of our extensively trained technicians. We apply the pre-emergent (which prevents seeds from taking root) and post-emergent (which kills current weeds) at the same service; this is the most common treatment. Moving forward with your custom lawn weed control plan, we will determine what (if any) weeds become resistant to post-emergent products. which we will address after the initial appointment.

    Should your yard be overgrown with weeds, we may need an additional visit to knock down the activity. This will be made clear upon our first onsite assessment. Our thirty day follow-up is included in the first service and we guarantee that you will be satisfied with the results. This often happens when exposed timber at the eaves begins to shift due to the dry desert climate, at poorly sealed eave blocking, even at the foot of the exterior wall where there may be direct access to the wall void. We have seen many different circumstances, but we have also solved many bee issues for our customers.

    If the bees can be removed safely and relocated, we will always entertain that option. However, for bees that have established a colony within the attic or wall of a home, we often need to exercise whatever option solves the issue safely and with expediency. Our first duty is to our customer and the wellbeing of his/her home.

    Not all wasps need a void with the protection bees do. In the Valley, one of our most common invaders is the paper wasp. You’ll know them from the paper nests they build in our recessed lights, hanging at the patio ceiling, or beneath the eaves of the home. Left untreated, these nests can house dozens of unfriendly wasps. One attribute of the wasp that makes them particularly nasty is the ability to repeatedly sting (unlike the honeybees one and done).

    rodents
    Mice and Rats are arguably the most significant structurally invasive rodents in the order Rodentia.

    Identified as commensal, these rodents’ habitat overlaps with humans. This can be problematic as these rodents are linked to about 55 different diseases including Viruses, bacteria, parasitic worms, etc. (Corrigan 2001). Some of these diseases are spread through bites, others through urine and fecal matter that is left in the pathways they travel.

    Rodents chew continuously through the day, working to gain access through most materials that otherwise may be a barrier to entry to our homes and offices. They can also cause considerable damage to electrical systems and utility pipes after gaining access to attics and crawlspaces. Rats gnaw with such determination they can negatively affect the structural integrity of building timber.

    To be fair, bats are an ally when wanting to fight mosquito pressure and other flying insects that may harm agriculture.

    Further, bats are important pollinators of plants and crops. So we are not generally aiming to eliminate bats, but we do want to prevent them from inhabiting areas in which we live and work.

    We tend not to worry about being bitten by bats and the chance a bat is carrying rabies is extremely low. However, bat droppings can carry disease and make quite a mess. We have a lot of stucco here in Arizona, and that stucco can be stained by the highly acidic nature of bat excrement. Bat droppings can also accumulate beneath areas where they perch making a mess on our patios that can be mistaken for rodent droppings.
